    The real challenge, however, is whether it can deliver a driving experience to match the lighter two-door coupe, or for that matter, the BMW 4-series Gran Coupe, which serves as its closest rival. Depending on whether you choose a petrol or diesel engine, buyers can opt for front-wheel drive or Quattro all-wheel drive, while at the top of the range sits a high-performance S5 Sportback model. F or all the reasons you might buy an A5 Sportback over the two-door coupe, space must be the most important.

    The good news, then, is that there is a lot more of it, with a large boot that matches the BMW 4-series Gran Coupe for space, and thus will accommodate a couple of large suitcases or two sets of golf clubs. Those used to travelling in the back of the previous A5 Sportback will appreciate the extra rear leg room in this new model, which means one tall adult can sit behind another with room to spare.

    Despite the sweeping roofline, head room is also very good. However, while there is a seat belt for a middle seat passenger, the large lump in the floor and hard backrest mean that sitting there is an underwhelming experience. A s with the A5 Coupe, this Sportback version is deliberately firmer than the equivalent A4 saloon in order to give it a sportier feel.

    Even on inch wheels this provides a smooth ride in its Auto or Comfort settings, while also keep body lean well under control. With very little wind noise and impressively quiet petrol and diesel engines, the A5 Sportback is an excellent car for long journeys.

    The controls are responsive and sensibly placed, the infotainment system is quick to respond and slick to operate and the optional Virtual Cockpit digital dial display is both hi-tech and great to use if a very expensive addition. T he A5 Sportback is a very competent car, with lots of grip and hardly any body lean, even when you corner hard.

    So while the A5 Sportback is fast and grippy, it can at times still feel a bit lacking in sparkle. The high-performance petrol S5 Sportback model would, however, score an extra point here, both for the extra performance of its V6 petrol engine and the way it can cover ground at such a searing pace. Despite its upmarket reputation, Audi doesn't have the best record for reliability. In the JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study it came 22nd out of 24 manufacturers - a pretty poor showing by anyone's estimation.

That said, running costs are predicted to be slightly lower, in part because the Audi emits lower CO2 emissions for equivalent power outputs across the range. T he A4 saloon on which the A5 Sportback is based scored top marks when crash tested by Euro NCAP, the benchmark European crash testing organisation, and all models come with six airbags and a system which will detect impending accidents at up to 53mph and apply the brakes if required.
